King St and the Tivoli have joined forces to unveil Open Season for 2024, an energetic two-month program filled to the brim with music, art and delectable culinary creations. To kick off the festivities, King St is throwing an epic opening night street party on June 1. Get ready to immerse yourself in the winter vibes, and join us from 3pm – 9:30pm for First Night: Blak Day Out, a free event suitable for all ages, presented in collaboration with Blak Social and the Tivoli. It promises to be a celebration of First Nations excellence, featuring performances from some of Australia’s most prestigious Indigenous artists, street food stalls, pop-up bars, a silent disco, live art and market stalls from local creators.
So save the date and get ready to get down to these stellar acts. Leading the charge and headlining the night is the ARIA-nominated, award-winning Indigenous singer and songwriter, Emma Donovan. With two decades of touring across Australia and collaborations with iconic artists under her belt, she’ll grace the King St stage with her powerful vocals and compelling narratives.
We’re excited to welcome the newly formed First Nations hip hop collective 3% to First Night. Comprising Triple J Blak Out host Nooky, along with Dallas Woods and Angus Field, this trio is set to deliver an impactful performance with their hard-hitting music Prepare to be swept up in the eclectic sound of BADASSMUTHA, a Githabul, Migunberri-Yugumneh woman known for her reggae, alt-pop, soul and funk stylings. She’ll light up the King St stage with her unique and electrifying performance. And get ready to groove to the psychedelic tunes of Velvet Trip, fresh off their Australia tour and debut album release- they’re promising a truly unforgettable show. Rounding out the lineup is TheAncient Bloods, an interchanging First Nations band run by Digi Youth Arts. Fresh off the release of their EP, they’re eager to share their smooth coastal melodies and good vibes.
Of course, a King St celebration wouldn’t be truly complete without some seriously good eats, and lucky for you they’re serving up good times by the plateful on June 1. Your taste buds are sure to be tempted as some of King St’s favourite eateries, including Xin Chao, Claw BBQ and Fat Dumpling, will be dishing out an assortment of mouth-watering market bites.
For those hungry for even more entertainment, our stacked lineup has plenty to offer. Head over to our silent disco area, grab a pair of headphones and prepare to be wowed by the musical stylings of DJ Kritty. With her lively and eclectic sets, she’s guaranteed to keep the party going all night long. We’re also incredibly lucky to be joined by local artist Sam Harrison, who’ll create a live mural throughout the night. Make sure you join us from start to finish to watch this talented artist create a masterpiece that will live on in the King St precinct long after the music fades away. And we’re adding a touch of retail therapy to the festivities with some vibrant market stalls featuring creations from talented local indigenous artists. Take a leisurely stroll through the stalls and you might stumble upon that one-of-a-kind treasure – be it a perfect gift, a charming trinket, or a keepsake to remember this incredible night out!
