Engaging Your Employees with company social media strategy

Your company’s social media strategy is like a handshake. If you have a weak grip and the remainder of your lunch wedged between your index and middle finger, your handshake-ee would be grossed out. If you have a firm shake with trimmed nails and a twinkle in your eye – bam – you’ve made a new friend. Your social media is a virtual handshake – a door into your world.

So after you nail the company social presence you wait for the lucky citizens to come along, shake your hand and chat. But there aren’t nearly as many as you were expecting.

One solution is to delegate your employees as social advocates of the company to get the wheels moving – they’re there, and they know the company back to front. But this takes a little motivating – everyone would rather be sharing pictures of their last night out than the newest offer.

Whether you’re selling shoes or pharmaceuticals, you’ll need to spice up your social to engage your employees. It’s easy as 1-2-3….4. Our favourite tips on how to be less of a social-dag will help you muster the troops!

  1. Brainstorm and set team goals.

This may seem a little strange – why have a meeting discussing what hashtags will be prime this month? Rest assured, having a dedicated theme and/or goal for your social presence will be key in creating a fantastic and solid voice for your company.

Is your goal to increase revenue, or to tighten the relationships between you and your existing clientele? Would it be more effective to have two or three posts a day? Give your employees direction in the social media game.

  1. Cut down on the nagging, mum.

We’ve all heard the “hey guys, please share our latest Facebook post,” and we’ve also heard the corresponding groans afterwards. Nobody really wants to remind their real-world friends that Saturday’s breakfast special will be half price. Instead, incorporate some company culture into your social media strategy. Does coffee constitute part of your business? Hold a latte-art battle, with each employee branding their milky masterpieces with the company hashtag. Someone got a flat tire? People love laughing at others’ misfortune – put that up (sorry Jess!).

  1. Pull out the pout – it’s selfie time!

Selfies. The new age art of the corporate world, believe it or not. Mock them, sculpt them – this a super fun way to get your employees ‘gramming and re-gramming at your next event. In fact, Brisbane-based artist Scott Wings used a “#secretselfie” competition in his Anywhere Theatre Festival production. He interacted with his audience and spread bulk awareness of his Facebook presence. The rules were simple: take a selfie at any time throughout the show. If you get caught, you will be pulled on stage at the mercy of the other audience members (this involved interpretive dance). If you don’t, prizes will flow like Niagara Falls.

Perhaps you’re holding an opening night for the next best vodka. Perhaps it’s the company’s Bridge to Brisbane team. You could always re-gram employee selfies to the company Insti page. Or just have some selfie-fun.

  1. Pass around the spirit stick of the tweeting world

There’s no doubt about it – we all love the limelight every now and then. Let the social-loving be shared amongst your employees and regularly put a different person in charge of your Twitter or Instagram account. Not only will you have a unique voice that is personal to the company, but your employees will have a chance to have fun – not just ‘retweet’ the daily special. Just sit back and watch them become competitive over who earns the most engagement.
