At Liquidity HQ, we love all things social media, and our passion for food goes without saying. We never need an excuse to put the two together, but when someone gives us a green light, we’ll take it. So when we heard about Virgin Mobile Australia and OzHarvest’s ingenious “meal for a meal” campaign, we couldn’t wait to spread the word.
Everyone already loves to share photos of their meals on Instagram. And why wouldn’t they? Food just looks so good, whether it’s a carefully constructed smoothie bowl by your favourite raw food account, or a decadent dessert from your favourite fine-dining restaurant. Virgin has hooked onto this, and replaced everyone’s favourite #foodporn with the more family-friendly tagline #mealforameal. Whenever someone posts a delicious photo of their meal with this hashtag on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram, Virgin will fund OzHarvest to feed a person in need. The rest of us can drool over the feed (literally) in real-time here. At the time of writing, 1,803 posts had been turned into real meals by OzHarvest.
OzHarvest is a pretty amazing cause to get behind. They are the first organisation to collect and distribute unwanted perishable foods from commercial outlets to around 500 different charities across Australia. Not only are they helping feed those in need with quality food, but they are also helping out our environment by cutting down the amount of wastage. Practically saints in our book.
We think this campaign is taking marketing and charity to the next level, and we love it. It’s a seriously cool and super creative idea, and you’ve never had an easier way to help someone in need.
We know we will definitely be using the #mealforameal tag whenever we post yummy food photos, and hope to see it take over from the dreaded (and often undeserved) #foodporn as the go-to food tag.
