Writing the perfect pitch in public relations can be tricky business. The last thing you want your contacts to do is completely ignore you or write back with a pointed “aca-scuse me?”
Pitch Perfect references aside, you need to grab your contacts’ attention in about 0.25 seconds. So this is where we stop rambling and get stuck into it!
Tip 1 – Research, research, research
And when you think you’ve finished researching, research some more. We can’t stress enough that you need to know what you’re pitching back to front and inside out. If someone flicks back an email asking what your client did back in the 80’s (roll with us here) then you need to get back to them with the deets ASAP.
Tip 2 – Jazz up the personality
You’re not a robot so don’t act like one. Let the people you’re contacting know that you’ve got a spoonful of spunk, a pint of pizzazz and a drop of dashing. You need to convince them you’re someone interesting and make them realise you have something worthwhile to say.
Tip 3 – Remember, you’re pitching
The pitch is different to the press release. Pitching is supposed to be short, snappy and to the point. It’s a little taste tester for the journalist, like a glass of wine before finishing the bottle. Leave the details and long-winded sentences for the attachments.
Tip 4 – Know your contacts
Learn who your contacts are. They are real people after all, and if you bump into them out in the big wide world then it’s best you know who they are. People love to be recognised and remembered. It makes them feel special and important (both of which they are, don’t underestimate that). If you can develop a business relationship outside of pitching emails then they may be more open to listening to you the next time you shoot something through.
