From flaky pastries and bite-size burekas perfect for morning tea to deliciously dense cakes suited for special occasions, West Village’s newest bakery Kürtősh has it all.
There is no such thing as ‘average’ at Kürtősh. Each pastry, cake, and loaf is handmade using only the most premium ingredients and inspired by memories spent cooking with family and friends, with many of the items baked on site.
The name Kürtősh originates from kürtőskalács, a Hungarian pastry known as a chimney cake due to its cylindrical shape—it is best described as the perfect combination of caramelised crunch with soft mouth-watering pastry on the inside. The humble family business started when owner, Ben Haikin and his brother travelled to Hungary to learn the art of making kürtőskalács. They returned with a 70 year old recipe that was courtesy of a Hungarian man who custom-built ovens in the local cafés, now served across Australia as Kürtősh House’s most coveted confection.
With eight locations spanning across New South Wales and Victoria, Kürtősh West Village is Kürtősh House’s first Queensland store, treating the Sunshine State to the renowned Hungarian delights.
But that’s not all… Kürtősh’s menu changes constantly, boasting a feast of small bites for on- the-go (chocolate brandy balls, anyone?) as well as slab cakes which are sold by weight rather than size—if that’s any indication of the decadence of these delicious treats. The list goes on from fluffy cheesecakes to gluten-free cakes with a twist, ensuring that all visitors will leave with their sweet tooth satisfied.
So if you’re ever looking for Kürtősh, simply follow the homely smell of freshly-baked goods through Peters Lane…
